Almost every other Apple product gets a discount at some point at retail stores. Why does this one not?

I really want a 128gb model to play music while I’m driving or at work, but the price is just a little too steep. I wouldn’t mind paying $249 like I did for my 160gb iPod Classic back in 2012.

It doesn’t go on sale because Apple really doesn’t want to sell it. It’s a zombie product. People who really want it will pay what Apple asks. Apple wants everyone else to buy an iPhone or an iPad mini.

If you're willing to pay that much, you can buy an iPod Classic with a new battery and 128GB SSD for less.

I want a much more compact device that can connect by lightning cable and Bluetooth, though.

That's reasonable.

If you're open to getting an Android-based device, I've had great experiences with no-contract Android phones, pop in a 128GB microSD card in, and have my pick of audio players. It'll be easy to get a new phone and micro SD card for under $100.
