Why doesn't WiFi calling work on my iMac?

It works fine on my recent rMB. In the preferences for FaceTime there is an option to turn on WiFi calling. But on my iMac (mid 2011) that option is not there. Is the iMac too old? It doesn't make sense. I don't see any hardware restrictions that should make WiFi calling impossible.
