Why have the price of external hard drives and SSD gone way up?

I'm trying to buy an external hard drive to back up my computer and I’m shocked that the price of external hard drives have gone way up, it does not matter if it is Western digital or Seagate they both very costly now.

$73 for 1TB, $90 for 2TB, $129 for 4TB and $182 for 5TB and SSD are even more expensive.

Why not just buy a bare drive and a drive enclosure? Does the drive even need to be new? Plenty of both on eBay or Amazon.
