Hi, for the past two days, I hear noisy fans and battery requires charging more often. This is unusual for this machine. I checked activity monitor and found that google gmail (accessed via safari) sometimes used 50% of CPU. I just closed those safari windows that I had multiple gmail logged in and the machine became quiet. How come gmail on safari caused the noisy fans and more battery usage?

Google's gsuite is heavily optimised for their Chrome browser. Other browsers work with its apps, but less efficiently.
It's the equivalent situation by which Apple optimise Safari to work more efficiently on iOS / MacOS than other browsers.

You could use Chrome for your gsuite apps, but then you'd lose the OS efficiencies of Safari. Your fans will still likely spin.

Bottom line: Google apps & websites don't play as well with Macs as they do other platforms. Same goes for 4k video codecs on YouTube (again, owned by Google). Just something we have to live with.
