Last time I posted about giving back an 11 pro and going to the 11 it met with many different reactions.
Amongst other opinions, some said it was purchase regret, some that you get what you want and others understood.
I acknowledge that the 11 pro has the best tech, and overall from a spec point of view its better then the 11 or the SE, no question.
I went to the 11 from the pro as I couldn't get on with the OLED screen type. I found it annoying and gave me headaches, going back to the LCD on the 11 just seemed cleared and brighter and more steady. I know this is only a minority issue as some people expressed understanding of this but most didn't. The 11 pro screen in terms of contrast and other specs is clearly better but I just didn't like looking at it. The other thing I liked about the 11 was the bigger screen, at lower resolution is just nicer to look at.
I have enjoyed the 11 very much for about 6 months.
However the weight and size has constantly bugged me. The 11 pro is pretty much the same weight and it seemed a shame that Apple didn't produce a slimmer lighter phone until now.
I have to say the SE 2020 is a revelation. With the same innards as the other phones its flys along even faster, due to the reduced resolution. Its lovely to hold and slip into a back pocket. The screen is technically the same resolution as the 11 for the surface area but it seems sharper somehow.
The bands at the top and the bottom I really worried about but its amazing how quickly I don't notice them any more. I presume for the SE 2022 they will probably go away. I also haven't noticed the reduction in screen size as much as I thought. After years of larger plus phone screens its nice to be able to live with a smaller screen. The SE 2016 was too small for me, so I never considered that.
Its nice to have the finger print reader again, I can glance at my phone under the table in a meeting without alerting folks that I am looking at the phone. The face recognition means you have to pick up the phone to your face which is very noticeable. I would actually prefer to have both, as the face recognition is slightly more convenient when walking down the street.
I hardly used the wide angle lens on the 11, I think the telephoto lens on the 11 pro is much more useful, especially for flattering people pics. The camera on the SE 2020 seems just as good. It would be great to have the telephoto in the next version. Obviously you can digitally zoom, but in low light this can get grainy.
The icing on the cake is the memory size. Having always had 64gb or less phones, on the SE 2020 I could now afford 128gb which is great for getting all my music on it and have plenty of space for a days shooting backup on my main camera. If you go for 256gb its the cheapest way to get that size at 40% of the cost of the 11.
In summary this zippy phone with an all day battery (would like more but whatever), great camera, almost perfect size, great build quality and price is a revelation. I look forward to the next version with an edge to edge screen and telephoto lens in 2 years
