Am a switcher in the making and have dDecided to get the lowest end ibook12" but able to wait another month at least for new revisions(which are long overdue)...why wait a month? i will not die w/o a new mac immediately have put up with lousy PC platform for like forever already another month will not hurt i guess....
My logic pls feel free to refute or correct
1. If the new Macintels start to appear by mid to late to 2006 my investment on the ibook is only USD999 vs what i would have bought if i went for a PB 12" at 1499 or 15" 1999. The USD 500 i can spend on an iPod 30GB which i dun have and get today with little or worries of new updates coming in the immediate future...after all i spend more time on music than the comp. The ipod can also supply music to the house wirelessly...better than changing cds
new to mac equip and switching at a time when new pdt directions has been annouced...best place to start would be their lowest offerings. the mac mini is not portable and i have a wireless environment at home
2. the ibook can support all my applications adequately i believe...ple let me know if otherwise
application n usage
1. internet
2.word processing
3. photo editing (pls advise if CS 2 runs OK on the ibook 12")
4.maybe light video editing..using provided s/ware
everything except photo editing i will do wirelessly so the extra battery juice on the i books will be sweet
I know the 30GB is paltry but i will get additional 100 to 250GB from an external HD where i will keep my itunes photos etc in the future...maxing the HD thru the BTO seems more expensive than buying a bigger external
3. Applecare is more costly for PBs than ibooks....looking at the discussion forums for displays on the apple website appears that white spots are not sorted for the ibooks and PBs...this is dissapointing as Apple appears to know the issues but not want to address them.
Applecare is a necessary item so this adds to the to the cost of ownership...349 vs 249 for ibooks.
I know some may say that the issues occur in a small minority but IMHO it can also be argued that the majority of users tend not to visit forums or have a high tolerance level for poor screens, sleep of death etc...or simply dun notice...looking at the number of recalls for PB, ibooks etc i want a safer bet on getting something cheaper if it fails or causes problems at least i did not pay too much for it ...no product is perfect but reading the forums apple QC with the laptops, heat on the iMacs etc need improvement.
Apple should consider switching their OEM for the laptops
i would hate to have to shuttle my prized mac up and down for repairs...living with slighly defective screen maybe a reality so maybe i can splurge on a bigger screen do the ibook hack and use the ibook primarily to surf conveniently in my house or outdoors but when i need to edit photos use the bigger screen....
What are your opinions??
12' ibook users does the ibook do the job?
Is this logic ok in light of speed bumps for ibooks n PBs till they move to Intel chips in 2006 or 2007?
the Powermac's have more power than the PBs is this diff night n day? cuz if needed should i get recruited by Pixar or national geographic or dreamworks n need the extra power to work...i think even the PBs will struggle right so may eventually need a powermac if the situation arises....
i wish i cud buy the PB with a clear conscience but the recent annoucements by apple, the QC issues for a significantly more expensive laptop, my honest to God usage for the machine all point to the ibook at this moment
pls advise .....is my logic valid or just flawed...
sorry for a very long first post
