I just looked at the Air on the Apple web site, and they are comparing the specs to the iPad 2; why wouldn't they compare it to something more current like the iPad 4?

Because the iPad 3 has been discontinued and will the iPad 4 be once the iPad Air is launched. The iPad 2 will still be available as an entry level regular sized iPad so it makes sense for them to compare the iPad Air to the iPad 2.

I have no idea, I was wondering this myself. I really want to know who will buy an iPad 2 over the mini at $399. Its hard to believe the price of the iPad 2 has only gone down $100 over a two year period.

I have the 3 and the 4 has better spec than the 3, so I would like to see the difference between the 4 and the Air to see how much better it really is.

OK, I am confused here. Why would Apple stop making the 3 & 4 and keep the 2 around; it does not even have Retina display?

Why wouldn't they have a better entry point iPad like the 3 or the 4?

They should just do mini for 299, mini r for 399 and then the air 499. Wish the min r and air started at 32gb.

It's way cheaper to produce the 2 than it is the 3 and 4 and there's also a bigger difference between the 2 and the Air (much older hardware and no retina). A discerning customer is more likely to go with the Air when comparing those 2 (a win for Apple). But if they go with the 2 it's still a win for Apple because the 2 is way over priced having only received a $100 price drop and it's 3 years old. Profit margins are high on that sale for Apple no doubt.

Ok? So spend a whole 10 seconds searching the internet, it really isn't difficult.

Apple no longer sell the iPad 4, so that's why it isn't on their website.

True.

To add, they are probably keeping the "legacy" model for other markets such as education and enterprise. Neither of those industries are in DIRE need of the retina display/faster processor when the A5 suffices, and will most likely need to purchase a bulk of the iPad 2 at a reasonable price. Also, these industries are highly invested in the older 30-pin accessories too (charging stations, etc.) and Apple probably would like to offer an iPad that caters to those needs, while at the same time, like techtoid suggests, makes a much larger profit margin.

Thank you for that great insight; don't know what I would have done without it.

That's kind of what I was thinking too; it is a marketing strategy, and one I don't necessarily with, but I'm not paid to make those decisions.

I guess they'll keep the 2 as long as it will run new IOS versions, then the Air1will eventually become the entry point, and on and on.....
