I bought one (4th Gen) off ebay and my god, it is so simple and useful. Someone here mentioned that Apple has pretty much stopped developing the product and scaled back their network engineers. There also hasn't been an update to TC for almost 5 years I believe, so it seems true.

I am very happy with my $70 purchase. I guess the only thing better would be an iCloud option that does the same. Maybe that's the answer to my question?

1. Apple seems to be getting out of "the router business".
2. As you reasoned, Apple wants you to shift backup to their cloud-based solutions.

That's fine, I'm a big fan of storing everything in iCloud. Makes restoring very easy for phones. I hope they are working on an OS option that will do the same, or a TM to iCloud.

Apple did away with TimeCapsule and Airport devices last year. It's not like it's going to happen... it already did.

And they already have an iCloud backup option built-in to the system—but it's not like TimeMachine with multiple copies of the same file. And it's certainly not as "seamless" as TimeMachine.
