I remove Macintosh HD and it keeps returning on reboot.

I've also checked Finder's preferences and nothing related is checked.

Any idea why this happens?

Did you you open the preferences like the one below and unchecked the box?

Is this the only issue you have or are there more problems, I ask because if your Home folder or any of its contents permissions are wrong you could see problems like these.

For instance, the preferences are saved in the Preferences folder, if this one has its permissions set for you to read only the settings are all reset upon a restart/logout-in.

It seems to be appearing under favourites. So I would imagine the more you use Macintosh HD it will appear in the list?

Im not sure I'm not at my Mac at home. Try getting rid of Favourites and just use 'places or devices' I cant remember what its called now.

Lol, I just looked at my own S/S, the Mac HD isn't even there.(Under Favs.)
My Macintosh HD is under devices, not like yours.

You could try to trash com.apple.sidebar.plist inside your preferences folder, then open Activity Monitor and quit the Finder, it should automatically relaunch.
(You'll loose all sidebar prefs.)
