Why is HandBrake's output less than the source

Running the latest version of VLC and Handbrake on a Core Duo iMac with 10.6.8.

I got a lot of .MOV videos today, taken from a digital camera, that are at 1920x1080 resolution. I want to transcode these to H264 with Handbrake.

Bandbrake detects most resolutions correctly, HOWEVER, for some of them it sets the output size at a bit less than that resolution, for example, it might put it down to 1844x960 or something.

Anybody know why this is?

Depends on preset.
Which one are you using?

Universal is pretty good.
