why is iMessage sending as email receipient?

WTF?

i sent my friend a text and it showed up on his phone as imessage but with my email address instead of my phone number/contact

when i click imessage it has my phone number greyed out and a check next to my email address.

wth?

What address does it have at the bottom under 'start new conversations from'?

And it always has your phone number greyed out since its the 'default' and you can't change it without changing your sim/number unlike your email addresses.
