why is locum so dang slow?

why is locum so dang slow? - I went on to secure erase 500mb using the finder option, which launches locum. the problem is that 9 hours later i had only deleted 300mb, and my combined disk activity was just shy of 2mb/s

anything i can do to improve it?

uhh 67k I think but they were outside my filevault, and i had just written them to disk not long before.
It was an App
