I can't think of any reason why they felt the need to do this? I can't turn on notification or add a message..

Just tested this. You have to get around 100m from the air tag, II had bi BT signal) before you will be allowed to toggle settings or change anything in Lost mode or notifications. Then once back in range yu cant turn it off, its greyed out. But after a short while you will get the notification, and the notification toggle changes to off on its own.

Still dont know why you would have this limitation. I would like to be able to use this when I just lose something in the house, but at a greater range than UWB..

But if you lose something that's not in range of UWB, then you'll be able to toggle "Notify When Found". Makes no sense to enable that when it already in range, and that toggle being grayed out is an indication that you are in range, which is a useful sign.

You use the app to find it if you loose it in your house, but you can't put a message for someone else to scan it. How would lost mode help you find it any faster in your own house?

As my house is a lot bigger than the UWB range.. If I lose something, and I think its in the house/on the block, I would like to be able to set lost mode, and have it notify me when it hooks up again.

I just dont see why this would be a no brainer option.. What's the downside..

In practice it's much less than 100M, more like around 10 meters if it's not a perfect open space and if the AirTag is inside anything that may block the signal.

Kind of pointless to use the AirTags to track anything other than a key left in your jeans pocket.

I always have to be around 100m away before the option is available.. its around the same time as it changes from "Near you" to a distance, which figures.
