Why is my Retina MBP cutting out?

Recently my 2012 15" Macbook Pro has been cutting out without warning, even when there's plenty charge left on the battery.

When I go to boot the machine back on again I get the 'no charge' symbol and it will not boot up until I plug in the charger again. Then it will turn on and work as normal.

Why is this happening and is there a resolution?

When I check battery condition it tells me to 'service battery' so perhaps this is related?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I do not know how batteries on Macs actually work, but from my experience on computers, the problem could be coming from several things:

1. The battery is faulty or it is no longer functioning properly.
2. The connector between the battery and the MAC is faulty.
3. The MAC's mainboard is not functioning properly. If you're getting a "Service battery". Maybe it is not charging the battery properly, or some other fault with it.

it could be related to one of the above.
