hi i have never used this before so why is it running in my terminal processes and should i stop it if so how do i do it

It's a standard system process. As spinnerlys implied, unless it's out of control and hogging the CPU, leave it be.

Does it take up that much CPU?

If so, disable previews in the Show Options (CMD+J) dialog.

(In Finder). But this probably won't stop quicklookd from reappearing as needed by the system.
 
It often helps, if the QL process runs amok, to quit all Finder windows (SHIFT+CMD+W), at least on my machines.
Ditto my Leopard machine, years after the first post here. The daemon was oinking up 60% or more of the CPU, but after closing all Finder windows, I couldn't even see it in top any more.
