iPod: A5, 5mp camera, 2 microphones, and supposedly 512mb ram.
iPhone: A6, 8mp, 3 microphones, and supposedly 1gb ram.

If you buy the iPhone 5 without a contract and no sim, couldn't you use it just like the iPod?
I already have a great phone, and I just want an iPod, but this is confusing me.

You can buy an iPhone without a contract and use it as an iPod but it will cost you much more.

Pricing:
iPhone 5 without contract:
$649 (16GB), $749 (32GB), and $849 (64GB)

iPod Touch 5:
$299 (32Gb) and $399 (64Gb)

Even if you get the 4S iPhone (last gen iPhone) at the Apple Store it will cost you $549 for 16 Gb without a contract.

No, if you get a sprint, at&t, or verizon one you could just cancel the contract.
But I'm not sure how would that work, you could use one of those unlocking tools on the interweb.

Then you'd need to pay the termination fee if you cancel the contract.

If you don't pay, then they'll trash your credit history. Your move.

Pretty sure if you buy on contract and then cancel it there is a cancelation penalty that effectively pays for the phone.
