It seems the MacBook have gotten lighter again. The first two had a weight of 5.2 lbs / 2.36 kg, the one released in May weighed 5.1 lbs / 2.31 kg and now it's down to 5.0 lbs / 2.27 kg.

What are they doing different?

possibly a lighter battery since battery techonology has to improve over time..
maybe the new SR chipset is lighter. Perhaps lighter components in the superdrive. Maybe the screen is lighter. It could be a combination of any of those things or anything else...
Unless someone takes it apart and weighs each individual component, i dont think we're going to find an answer.

Perhaps they put some bricks in it and take them out one by one with each update :D

I think this is really the answer. Prior to the SR mbp, the weight of a mbp was around 5.6lbs, but once the mbps went SR, the weight dropped to 5.4lbs.

When the MBP got SR they went from CCFL backlight to LED, which decreased the weight a bit. This did not happen with the MacBook as far as I know.

True, but they both could be contributing factors. I'm pretty sure that the mbps lost .2lbs when they went SR, and the SR macbooks lost .1lbs. So, maybe the LED backlit screens removed .1lbs of weight, and the SR chipset removed .1lbs of weight.

Sigh.

omg, did the OP just made a post about .1 lbs difference?

you take apple to seriously, its not that serious!!!, SERIOUSLY!!!

He was simply trying to find out why there's a weight difference. If you don't care about it, then don't post here. It's really quite simple.

I can't find it now but there is a post somewhere that a new macbook owner (the newest revision) was looking at the screen and thought it looked more like an LCD than a CCFL and wrote a post on it. He also noted that it was 0.2 lbs lighter and that it was noticeable. He went to the apple store I believe to check out his observation and was even more convinced that it was an LCD rather than a CCFL after that trip. That post died the way posts do but if someone wants to find it it would be interesting....

LED. Again: LED.

I know, spelling doesn't matter. But sometimes it does.

Sorry, LED is correct, it was too late at night and my brain wasn't working. All my references were to LED NOT LCD.

Probably a slight redesign on the motherboard, a slightly smaller heatsink for the latest refresh of CPU's - those sorts of things can easily drop you 90 grammes.

I thought it was from the holes that are now drilled into the hard drive caddy... seriously, it's .1 lbs, it could be from just about anything.
