When putting in your Apple ID in iTunes for any reason, there's an option to select AOL.

What in the world is it there for? How does that even make sense? I'm probably missing something here :p

Back in the old days, iChat was an AOL client (it might still be; I don't use it). It therefore could use an AOL account, or you could create an Apple account and use that instead. From that regard, both account types were pretty much identical.

iTunes works the same way; both account types are supported.
