Why is there so much in the trash ?

Why is there so much in the trash all the time ? When I first got my laptop, I emptied the recycle bin about...2-3 months later, and there was 70K items in the trash...I know I didn't throw that much away (so I emptied it)...that was two weeks ago, today I decided to empty the trash, and guess what...5.5K files to delete...seriously wtf ?

Why is there so much in the trash all the time ?

This is not "normal behaviour", so it's not something anyone can answer without significantly more information.

What are the files? Are their filenames suggestive of anything -- copies of emails, photos, application preferences, what?

What OS are you running? What model of Mac? What apps do you normally use? Do you shutdown and restart your computer often?
