Why is trashing email so slow to trash?

Using an ios11 iPad Pro over my Home WIFI network, why has Apple Mail become so slow to empty email trash. It was not this slow a few weeks ago, but it takes forever to completely trash email.

Anyone know what might have changed in the last few weeks?
