Hi, due to an uncontrollable situation, I am now in the market of purchasing a laptop. I read that M5 iPad Pro will be delayed to September/October while M5 MacBook Pro will be delayed to earlier 2026. Are these rumors reliable? Why there are such delays besides possible profits related reason from Tim?

I was considering to buy from Costco since they have a 90 days return policy. However, if Apple really delays the release of the M5 MacBook Pro til earlier next year, it makes the decision difficult. If they were to release M5 iPad Pro in May, I could consider buying it and trade in when M5/M6 MacBook Pro is released.

Unlike Apple makes something undesirable (e.g. too thin and causes heat issue, reduce battery life, butterfly-like keyboard again, etc.) due to form over function, I most likely will buy a M6 MacBook Pro when it comes out as I don't like the notch. I don't care about OLED as the current screen is good enough for me.

Everyone is always battling the "buy now or later" question and @Mr_Brightside_@ is absolutely correct when he states the standard TLDR "If ya need now buy, if not wait" response. However, I can understand wanting to come online and seek the "What I would do now" answer from the internet masses.

I faced a similar problem last year before the latest M4 Studios were released. I wanted a desktop not a laptop but I also needed a Mac right away for workflow reasons. I ended up purchasing a Macbook Pro with the desired specs I had in addition to a Thunderbolt Docking station to shore up my "Desktop Ports and 10GBE" requirements.

Am I disappointed that I was unable to get the new M4 Studio and avoid having to purchase extra hardware? Absolutely. I have never used the Macbook off its docking station and probably never will. If anything ever happens to my expensive Docking station I will absolutely trade in my MBP on a current generation Studio (The M4 pro is faster than my M3 Max for my workflow).

My Advice is don't chase the "next version" of Apple Hardware unless your current hardware is 2+ generations behind. We're always going to be chasing the next version of Apple Hardware and the minute you buy it, its "old". All we can do is temper our desires to "have the current sauce" against the need to actually perform the work. Now.. Can I interest you in a M3 Macbook Pro Max with Docking Station? :p

I read that the M4 series still have 5K2K display issue so if possible, I hope they would fix this in M5. However, due to uncontrollable circumstances, I spend more time outside than used-to-be at home all the time. That means I need a laptop. Even I replaced the battery of the MBP 2010 17" and the storage to SSD, somehow it does not keep the charge for long. Moreover, the OS is not current so possible security issue.

To avoid troubles, I always trade-in with Apple. A M5 MBP will have better trade-in value than a M4 MBP given that this is now the end of July. Unless Apple does something stupid in the redesign next year, I probably want to get that one without a notch.

So, it is better to buy from Costco since by October, we may know if M5 MBP will be released at the end of this year or earlier next year?

I was hoping Apple would have gift card and discount on AppleCare+ in this year's back to school but they decided to give things that either I have or not interested in as promotion.

It is like Apple under TC does everything against all my plans.

The jump from what you have to an M4 will like make the jump from M4 to M5 unnoticeable.

Good heavens, people are quick to jump on Cook. We’re still in pandemic-related supply chain upset, with the bonkers global trade war kicked off by the current US regime making things orders of magnitude worse, and on top of that, the M5 chips aren’t even on the market yet and are using bleeding-edge technology for manufacture. That might have something to do with delays?

Why do you believe delaying a product launch would increase profits?
I'm not sure I understand your reasoning here.

I don't know. Anything
@hajime
@waydabber has answered the reason that the 5K2K display resolution problem won’t/cannot be ‘solved’, because it is incompatible with supporting their own monitors:

I think he wrote that he “thinks”… Could be right. Could be wrong. Only Apple knows exactly what they have done.

Apple Product identifiers have leaked every Mac release through 2026

Along with those base M5 Macs, Apple is expected to introduce the MacBook Pro with M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max, which the leaked identifiers line up with. Apple is expected to maintain the current design of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro for the fall 2025 release, meaning that it is a basic spec upgrade overall.

Doesn't sound delayed to me. ITs hard to state that an unannounced product is delayed when apple doesn't say anything.

And an updated iPad Pro Launching in October would not be late, it would be right on time given Apple has been releasing pros on an 18mo cadence since M1.

Release dates for any products have never been all that consistent for long periods. Apple seems to favor the first week of November right now for Pro notebooks, but they've had steady patterns in the past and changed without explanation. Before Apple Silicon they were on an alternating Summer/Fall pattern. No one but Apple really knows their product schedule.

If you need a computer now, buy the one that fits your needs. Let Apple worry about their profits.

With the M5, I hope they will get the issue mentioned in the below thread resolved. I read that M1 to M3 series have no such issue but the M4 series.

I'm sorry for you having to explain things over and over. In the forums nowadays people don't answer the OP's questions anymore and don't follow the thread so they make assumptions or assertions that the OP has been clear about or have already answered. They are quick to tell you what they think about scenarios the OP didn't ask for. It's one thing to offer suggestions to help mitigate an issue the OP may have. It's another thing entirely to aggressively tell an OP what to do, especially when it doesn't even address the original OP's question. Comes across as officious and didactic. To your point, I'd wait for M5, if you can. Apple has not even acknowledged the 5K2K issue that the M4 suffers from despite it being documented by credible sources. But like Steve Jobs once said, "you're holding it wrong"; it seems Tim Cook has adopted that philosophy as of late or it maybe a design flaw that can only be fixed in the new M5. But if you're not a user who uses their laptop to connect to external monitors then maybe that M4 issue won't effect your use case. Either way, good luck!!

You're reading rumors and taking them as gospel, and then blaming "Tim" when reality doesn't match the rumor. The M5 machines have not been announced, so how can they be "delayed"?

Buy a MacBook if you need one. Nobody here has any secret information, my dude.
