I really don't like the name 4S. It doesn't flow as well as 3GS did and it just sounds awkward. Even if the update is "4S" and not "5", why don't they just call it iPhone 5? And when the "iPhone 5" comes along they can just call it iPhone 6, etc.

Just to clarify,
This thread is about the NAME of the phone. Not any features, what you want, etc.

If they release just a 4S it means that they are admitting to a minor upgrade which they are too embarrassed to call the 5 lol.

I'd rather buy a iPhone 4S with big screen than a 3.5 inch iPhone 5. You can even call it WinDroid and I'll love it still so long as it has a 4 inch screen running iOS.

Which is yet another reason why it will be called iPhone 5.

True. Since every update is magical and revolutionary, it would only make sense to name it iPhone 5 even if it's "minor." :p

If they do call it a 4s and we do not get a 5. I think next years model will be called 4gs to represent LTE. Just my theory.

With the term iPhone 4S turning up in Beta iTunes i hope you are right my friend.

Hopefully by tomorrow I will be laughing to myself and wondering why I ever (highly) doubted that Apple were gonna pull through this time whilst browsing high resolution images of a 4" screen teardrop shaped iPhone 5 :D

I hope so, too, but it's looking like you might had to fast forward about 1 year from now to have that. ;)

What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.

Really?

The problem I have with Apple calling it a 4S is that it's not a 4th gen iPhone...its the 5th gen, so it'll confuse a lot of people. I still get lots of customers calling both the iPhone 3G and 3GS the iPhone 3...I hate when people do that but the fact is Apple shouldn't call it a 4S because it isn't that, it'll just create a lot of confusion when people come up and say, "can I buy an iPhone 4?" and we have to say, "4 or 4S?".

The 3GS was appropriately named because of two things: the S meant speed since no other phones were really out that could compete at that time, and the 3 was still there because it was still relevant since it was the 3rd gen phone.
