I would guess because its not out yet, apple has a history of issuing an embargo on reviews for unreleased products.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. It looks like it's got a coat of wax on it.

Also I notice there's no "S" designation on it (or 3G S). How do you tell the difference, especially if you put a 3G S 16 GB next to a 3G 16 GB?

you could tell the difference because the 3gs has a much more visible writing on the back, the logo and fcc and all that. i wonder how different the camera will look in up close pics?
