I was looking at my sister-in-law's Blackberry 8900 today and saw that she had special music or tones that she can use for whenever she gets a text message or mms.

We on the iPhone are stuck with whatever options are available in the OS. We can't customize like we do our ringtones.

Why don't we have this yet? I'd love to add my own text message tone.

Hope they let us pick custom ringtones or SMS tones instead of the 5-6 stock ones.
Maybe in the next iphone after the 3GS :D

You can pick custom ringtones, that's not the issue, its the SMS tones that we don't have the option with.

If Apple wanted us to have custom SMS tones, they would give it to us.
All must obey Big Brother Apple.

The lack of options annoys me more than not having MMS of which I could care less for. All of my friends and myself included with iPhones pick the electronic text tone b/c it's the loudest one. It's utterly stupid that we all simultaneously check our phones whenever one of us receives a text. And this happens a lot during our weekly poker game.

+1 on the jailbreak.

everyone download my custom sms tone on cydia

its the sidekick "new message" but in a different voice.

pretty hott

oh. and if you have a unlocked tmobile iPhone just add the mms settings and you'll have it
