Why not post the computers serial number in public?

Just wondering why it is not recommended to do this? I am putting my 17" up for sale and figure a lot of questions could be answered by people looking up the specs

Give the apple model number instead... Many different types of issues can arise if someone get a hold of your serial number. From calling apple and claiming it stolen to using your serial on another black market computer which could make selling your harder.

With some research they can find out your personal information like address and stuff; it's the idea as showing your VIN and plate number in photos; a bit of anonymy is good on the Internet.
