Why has Apple not just done msg safe for all devices. This year could have been perfect for watch and then add to AirPods 3 later this fall. We need better streamline between iPhone. Watch. And AirPods.

seems so silly a proprietary charger is still being used.

You could argue that Apple Watch already uses kind off a MagSafe iteration, even if it’s not the official branding name of it’s charging technology. MagSafe itself is proprietary so it’s no different for AW, for Mac or for iPhone.

Why not Qi charging? It may be that the wireless charging would be too inefficient and slow because of the size of the device itself and the rounded back of the AW, that would complicate wireless charging. I only speculate, maybe there’s a more obvious reason but these seem plausible.

iPad can’t use MagSafe because of, reasons. MacBook can’t either, so yeah. I would not want to charge my MacBook or iPad on a charging pad either since overheating is going to be inevitable or the Charging speed is going to be slow.

I still sync music files to my phone and wireless syncing has always been spotty at best. I usually just end up using a wired connection.

I think they need to do something more consistent along watch and iPhone. At least do Qi on watch like other android watches do. That way MagSafe would also work on the watch.

Full wireless? How you gonna get the power from the mains outlet?

As for phones you don’t *have* to use MagSafe. Use a Qi pad if you want interoperability with you’re AirPods wireless charging case.

I don't think Qi charging can work on a device as small as a watch. The majority of Android watches don't support Qi charging either, including the latest and greatest Galaxy watch 4.

ever looked at the bottom of the watch and maybe noticed it was curved? IF you were to implement Qi on such a device, you're dealing with horrendous losses AND long charging times ... the current design is OPTIMIZED for the watch and it should stay that way ...

The Apple Watch is FULL wireless induction charging. Also it DOES use Qi wireless induction charging but Apple has taken the open source Qi standard and added some proprietary "trickery" to make you have to use the Apple wireless charging puck.

Okay. Make the bottom flat and problem solved

how do you know that won’t introduce new problems in biometric sensor reliability?

‘cuz the current bottom shape seems to help maintain contact without requiring a super tight strap. Garmin does similar.

that, and I think it be be very uncomfortable to wear ...

How does google and android watches do it

With a sensor bump. Just like Apple and Garmin.

Okay so Apple can do the same and allow regular qi chargers to charge the device.
There are no phots that would show the "bump" on Samsung's site, but, look what' in the box: wouldn't be surprised if that wireless charger would be shaped to fit the bump, and could it have a magnet? Someone who owns one would have to confirm ...
also found this: You can buy the Samsung Galaxy Watch Charger from Samsung's official website. While the Galaxy Watch charges using Qi technology, not every Qi charger will work with it. Therefore, it's best to stick to Samsung's official charger.

If they are going to standardize across devices (excluding the Watch), I hope it's with USB-C. Wireless/magnetic connections are useful in some circumstances, but not in others. USB-C still seems newish now, but it will be around for a long time and does more than Lightening.
