Am curious why the Apple Studio 27” display need to be so thick despite it has its dedicated Mini. My LG TV screen is a mere 4mm thk. My 2015 27” iMac is only 5mm thk. Apple always endeavour a slimmer iphone edge as design move forward. How on earth can they end up with a thicker edge that seems 3 steps backwards. I like the minimal bezel though. Or intentionally, the next model will see a much slimmer edge so they make more money.

They stopped that nonsense once Jony Ives left. Have you not noticed the the latest Mac redesign was thicker then the prior model, or that the MBA is no longer a wedge shape piece of cheese?

I would assume, the thickness is in direct proportion to the space required for the display, and supporting components, along with cooling needs.

Why does it matter how thin a monitor is? You generally look at monitors straight on. You also almost never move them around, they're not really considered mobile devices. I have my BenQ 4k monitor on an arm, and I never move it around. BTW, that's also a thicc boi but it doesn't matter. What does matter is the quality of the build, image, and performance. I'd rather have a thicker monitor that has a great display, no issues with refresh rates and offers plenty of ports.

Speakers (6?), power supplies (2), and fans (2) as well as the processor. Also, there is no "chin", so all components have to be behind the screen.

My iMac (2019) is about 3 cm thick in the middle - slightly thicker than the Studio display. I don't think there has ever been a 5 mm thick iMac. Your "5 mm" iMac gets much thicker as soon as you move in from the edges.

Aesthetically, I have never liked the bulging iMac design. I much prefer an even thickness.

I think the main reason is that they included the beefy power supply inside

they had to split the power supply in half to make it fit. All that engineering just to hide something they could have put in an external brick

I reckoned you know what I mean when I said 5mm. Its obviously the edges. Its just optics when the edges are slim one would optically perceived a thinner back. I also like the sprayed stand that has a slight angulation outwards instead of the square legs, though it may just save a tiny space.

I can't argue abt asethetic. Its really to each his own. Tks

It's the large power supply (as jabbr mentioned), which eliminated the need for the giant power brick other displays come with. It also gave Apple room for way better audio than you typically would get from a display. And a bit of thickness is arguably a positive here, since it also makes it easy to move or tilt the display.
