Can any one tell me why new locked iPhone's go for over $500 and used ones over $400 on eBay, when you can just order one from Apple for $399? Is this driven by international buyers or what? Am I missing something?

Firmware 1.1.1(or older), which is sim unlockable and can be hacked with AppTrapp. That's the only thing I can think of. I wondered the same thing myself the other day.

People will pay a premium for phones they can hack.

I've seen many go for over $700 + shipping. Mainly cause those countries aren't able to purchase iPhones directly from Apple.

Is the firmware version printed on the outside of the box?

if your iphone didn't come with 1.1.2 out of the box, and you upgraded to 1.1.2, you can always downgrade to hack it again.
