Hi, in the past it was kind of like a box but now it is in portrait shape. How to make it wider? Tried to drag the window from the side and from the corner ibut the only way to change the shape is to make it taller.

because it's no longer system preferences, but a newly-designed system settings, a vertical window that, currently, is just as it appears.

You can also make it shorter...
You will also notice that System Settings is very similar to Settings on your iPhone.
Part of Apple's plan, I suppose, to make both macOS and iOS/iPadOS similar in other ways, perhaps with the view of merging the various systems at some point.

As others mentioned, it's been revamped in Ventura. You can't get the old look back if that's what you're trying to do.

In the past, only apps from respective type of devices showed up on the app store but I can see iOS apps showing up in the app store of Mac. What is going on? I think in the past somebody mentioned that we could run iOS apps on the Mac?

Because this atrocity was grafted from a portrait-only iPhone hampered by SwiftUI.
I finally found the shortcut location for the Stage Manager. NO way to find it in search!!!!!

Jony Ives, where are you when we need you? Steve is turning over in his grave.

Settings needed an overhaul, but not this.

Another problem is that under Wallpapers, the right half is cut. We need to expand in each category to see all options.

What? Aside from wondering why you're just making up crap, I really want to understand why people are spending so much time in System Settings such that all the hand wringing is necessary.

You can scroll horizontally with the trackpad or Shift+Scroll with a mouse when your cursor is in each of the rows.

Because they're going out of their way to make macOS look like iOS.
In all fairness, as much as I despise the iOS-ification of macOS, I can't deny that the old System Preferences was a bloody mess and was in dire need of a revamp.

That's because you've got an M1 Mac. These can also run iOS apps; their hardware architecture is similar to the i-devices.
This wasn't possible with Intel Macs.
