...reviews on the same suction-style car dashboard mounts for phones and other devices?

I have been reading with great amusement the "5 Star" (great) and "1 Star" (terrible) reviews such as on Amazon about those suction-cup type phone mounts, the ones with the sticky "gel" type suction cups that already stick kinda well just by the adhesive material they are made of, on rough surfaces like grain-patterned car dashboards.

Some people rave about how well their mount stays on even after weeks or months of driving on bumpy roads, etc. Yet others complain that their suction mounts do not stay on at all, some even when brand-new out of the package and without even the weight of their phones installed yet.

How can there be such a difference, especially on the exact same brand product model? I have one (Exomount) and it grabs the pebble-grained surface of my car's dashboard like it was Super-Glued on. And this was just from initially touching it to the dash and pressing down gently. At this point it already held pretty tightly and you had to lift and peel it off from one edge just to remove it. Once I had it in the exact position I wanted, I then clamped down the lever that created a vacuum to really suck down the mounting cup tightly, at which point it felt like you could hang and do pull ups from it.

One theory I began to have is when I read one review that claimed he, "wiped down the dash really well" like when he was detailing his car. That got me to thinking -- did he Armor-All his dash or something first? Does anyone have any experience about that with any of these mounts? And whether applying a surface conditioner (like Armor-All, etc.) might affect the suction grip somehow?

Just wondering because I really would like to condition the dash before summer gets here, but won't if it might affect my phone dash mount.

TIA for any thoughts or input on this.
