Not the most important question right now I know but I keep wondering why they have called this iPhone the IPhone 5?

Going back to 2010 it made sense to call the new iPhone the iPhone 4 because it was the 4th iPhone, ran iOS 4, had an A4 chip etc etc but here we are 2 years later at the launch of the 6th iPhone, running iOS 6, with an A6 chip and they've called it the iPhone 5. I just don't get it.

Because going from the 4 to 6 would cause the majority of consumers to be left baffled, wondering what happened to number 5. Not everyone looks into things as over-excessively as the internet forum crowd (breaking down each individual update into it's own "version").

Because 5 comes after 4. I can't wait for them to drop the number scheme and go to simply 'iPhone' - will finally stop these threads...

Most people don't know what the chip is called and many (maybe most?) people don't know what the os is called!

This. Consumers are pretty damn stupid.

Though this was beat up over and over last week and some threads were even shut down due to repeat postings, I will chime in.

Because they did.

MOST of the public called it that.

There was never a 5.

For the same reason they didn't call the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 2. And the same reason they didn't call the iPhone 3GS the iPhone 3.

I'll never understand the people who pushed the idea of the iPhone 6.

It seems pretty clear that Apple's on a Tick/Tock cycle with the iPhone. One external design lasts for two years:

--------
3G
3GS
--------
4
4S
--------
5
5S?
