Why was the apple store down for WWDC?

They revamped the look of it...for one thing, it's a wider page now.

Compare the new US store to the UK store, which retains the old look for now.
 
To be fair, I understand why your expectations were such - after all they revamped the entire Apple site, but only the Apple Store was down.
 
It's a bluff.

When the announce new products the store goes down. If the store DIDN'T go down, my first thought would have been "no new toys to buy :( "

But since they did what they did ... there was some anticipation of some slick new toy.

And is Pepsi changing the price? No, it works the same, but looks nice. Same idea with the new Apple site. Heck it might even work better, so you can find information faster...but its all the same stuff(minus updates for leopard)
 
I expected something new and at about 2:00 EST when Steve was still on the new Leopard features, I was in a Mac store following the live feed here on MacRumors. A person next to me was buying a laptop and the associate said that the person should wait. He said that a new product was going to be released and that a truck would probably pull up sooner or later with the new product. The customer ended up waiting. At that point I was like OMG something MUST be coming. Then nothing but a new layout which i happen to like a lot. I guess they had to put in the new layout and probably put some Leopard pre-release stuff into the store
