Why won't my ichat open?

Ichat won't open on my mac for some reason, its as if it has disappeared from my computer. the icon is not the ichat icon, but the generic applications icon. What have I done to it? help!! please. x

Does it open from other user accounts? Have you used any system cleaning or slimming apps recently? You may need to reinstall it from the OSX discs, possibly using Pacifist.

Thank you for replying to my query. Thanks for recommending pacifist, which is a very good programme. Unfortunately it tells me that I have accidently deleted my ichat application files, so now my problem is where to download ichat again. I don't have the original disks as I got my computer through my university, (they lent it to me while i'm doing my phd, I probably could get the disks but it'll take ages.) so thanks again and if anybody knows where i can download ichat that would be much appreciated.
