Why won't my iPhone 5S pair with my MBP via Bluetooth?

I have an iPhone 5S running iOS 10.1 and a 2015 MBP running OSX 10.11.6.

Every time I try and pair them via Bluetooth, they stay connected for a few seconds and then disconnect, and I get a box on the iPhone popping up saying that the MBP is an unsupported device.

Really? An iPhone from 2014 can't talk to a MBP from 2015? Is there something I'm missing here?
