Why won't my MBP shutdown?

Over the past few times I have shut down my Mac, it just sits on this screen (attached), which spins every now and again, its mostly stationary.

I end up having to force the computer to turn off by holding the power button, and when it restarts, it says that I had to shut down my computer because of a problem.

Are there any logs I can check to see whats causing it to fail to shut down?
