Okay so this is a brand new ipod touch no jailbroken, I go to settings>general>wallpaper then I choose a wallpaper and click set wallpaper but everytime I return back to the main screen it's still just Black? what's up with this? I am using firmware 1.1.1 HELP!

that "wallpaper" will only appear once you put your ipod to sleep and wake it you'll get the slide to unlock screen and the background will be whatever wallpaper you chose. not too exciting...

I changed the wallpaper but even when I click the top to sleep it and go back it's still a black background? what's up with this?

Changing the "background" means changing the screen you see right before you see the springboard (or, the 'home screen') You can't actually change the screen behind the buttons without jailbreaking.
