I recently shipped an iPad 8 (A2428) to my family and they're experiencing some battery problems. They tell me over the phone that the amount of charge available sometimes rapidly changes from 79% (or what I suspect the current true charge in the battery is) to 1% and back.

They also tell me they can't get it to charge in general; sometimes when they plug it into a wall wart or a USB port on a fancy recliner, the device doesn't charge at all ... do iPads require special chargers? They're using an official Apple-brand USB Lightning cable.

I'll have a better idea of the problems in a few days when I visit and can get hands-on time with the device, but are there any reasons the device would be having these problems in the first place?

Faulty battery I bet...

Is it a well used iPad? Sounds like it needs a battery service (aka replacement).

Well, the digitizer was shattered to hell and gone when I got it a month back, but I repaired it and the device charged and functioned just fine after I put it back together. It was only after I shipped it to my family that it started experiencing these issues they described to me.

They can call or iMessage Apple Support and describe the problem, and ask Apple to run the battery diagnostic… they set it to run remotely and they can tell you if the battery is shot and how much it will cost to replace. It’ll be a pretty quick and easy way to get a definitive answer.

Hmm.. that may be the problem.

Would that work even if the device isn't under warranty? I got it second-hand, after all.

this behaviour is a clear signs of dead cells within the battery. Battery needs replacement, but at this point it's pretty expensive since the device is damaged. So probably not worth it...

I own old Airpods 1. The left airpods is dead after 2 minutes and start charging at 90%. R.I.P.
