I bought a used jailbroken iOS 4.2.1 iPhone 3G for $120 off of Craigslist for my kid who wanted video so I ran the requisite search to find, among others, Cycorder well received.

I installed Cycorder from Cydia and when I pressed on the Cycorder icon to run the application, it simply comes up blank, and, then just goes away in a few seconds.

Nothing else happens!

Thinking I didn't know how to use the program, I searched for the Cycorder use model, to find that the program 'should' bring up a GUI.

But, it doesn't do that for me.

Would someone kindly help me to debug what is causing Cycorder to simply come up, and then break down?

Need to find a solution to the Cycorder Video flash-crash!

Try removing Cycorder via cydia, reboot (I guess) and install it again. If it doesn't work after that, I'm stumped.

That's exactly what I did, before posting. Cycorder 0.9-6 still did the CyCorder flash crash on the Apple iPhone 3G with jailbroken/unlocked iOS 4.2.1 (on T-Mobile).

Researching, I find alternative video recording software for the iPhone 3G on iOs 4.x.

For example, some suggest QiK; but it seems to not be freeware. :(

I've just jailbroken a 3G with 4.2.1 and am having the same problem with Cycorder and MobileTerminal.

Finding it tricky to track down definitive information on this, but some old forum posts talk about 4.2.1 not having as much support as 4.1 (possibly out of date now though). I might try JBing down to 4.1 and see if that works better.

If anyone has any experience with these problems, all help greatly appreciated!

CyCorder isn't supported 4.0 on up

Drat!

Since I'm brand new to Apple products, and the vast offerings for them, I'm confused why the Saurik Cydia site doesn't even 'mention' this all-important fact of the iOS support! :(
- Cycorder cydia.saurik.com canonical site

3G the best firmware is 3.1.3 here is a good link to get it. http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ after you install it Cycorder should work fine.

Thanks for that link since all things Apple are new to me - and - to know which is the BEST iOS is a wonderful tidbit of valuable insight.

However, my initial 'goal' is to first try to get the application to work on the existing iOS; and, if that isn't humanly possible, then to get a similar freeware or payware application to take its place - and - only if both those logical attempts fail, to then downgrade the iOS as a solution of last resort (mainly because I have never touched an iOS in my life and this isn't the right time for me and others like me).

In summary, it's disappointing that Cydia doesn't list the support iOS for Cycorder; but I'll keep googling for answers.

Solution Strategy:
1. The original intent was to figure out what was wrong with Cydia (that, doesn't seem likely now)
2. Then, the next goal will be to find a different freeware video recorder that will work on iOS 4.x
3. If that fails, then we can look at payware video recorders (Qik is one that is proposed but it has severe drawbacks)
4. If all that still fails, the only available solution may be to downgrade the operating system (but I sure hope not)

EDIT: So far, from googling, the following 'solutions' have been proposed:
a) Downgrade the iOS from 4.x to 3.x (this would be the solution of last resort)
b) Upgrade to a payware iPhone 3G stand-alone video recorder that works on iOS 4.x
c) Upgrade to a adware/freeware iPhone 3G stand-alone video recorder that works on iOS 4.x
d) Figure out why Cycorder crashes & resolve that issue (doesn't seem likely at this point)

RUNNING EDIT: Analysis of proposed solutions
- Cydia Cycorder, Pro: People love it Con: Won't work with iOS 4.x Type: adware
- Dreamcatcher Video Recorder, Pro: People like it, Con: no real-time compression Type: payware
- Record Video for Free, Pro: Apple support Con: some bugs in iOS 4.x Type: adware
- Qik video recorder , Pro: Supports iOS 4.x; Con: won't work offline Type: payware
- Camera Genius , Pro: Works on iOS 4.x Con: ? Type: payware
- ?
