why would mail not work when sync'd automatically from MBP?

all the settings were transferred from my MBP for mail, calendar, contacts, etc. why would my mail not be working? double checked the outgoing server, passwords, etc. everything looks correct.
what about changing the SSL settings in advanced settings?
