why would VPN allow iplayer to work on iPhone and Mac, but not firestick

trying to get bbc iplayer in Portugal. Windscribe is free up to a certain amount, 50gb a month with a certain code so thats the VPN I'm using.

on my iPhone and iMac, iplayer works

on fire stick, using the Windscribe app, iplayer knows im not in the uk, even though whatsmyip says its coming up as London.

why would the device make a difference?
 
Given that the Fire Stick is a purpose-built device, my guess would be that Amazon has some sort of setup to detect and stop you from using a VPN to weasel around geographic restrictions.

At home, I have my entire network going thru a VPN from PIA at the router level, but I have to exempt my Apple TVs and Rokus for that reason.
