Maybe I'm missing something but why would you choose apple's?? I talked to a specialist and he says that you do NOT qualify for the discounts on the data plans the carriers offer for using their upgrade programs. Verizon is also cheaper(31/mo for my model vs 37/mo on apple). So the only benefit apple has is apple care + correct?? am i missing anything?

Also for those curious you can only use apple upgrade program on the big 4 carriers at the moment... no sub carriers/MVNOs

Hmmm. Didn't even think about losing the carrier plan discount. I just posted about how the Apple Plan could be good lol!

Yeah as far as I know, the benefit is getting a carrier unlocked phone and AppleCare. Not sure if it's worth it if you're paying more for your plan.

Does it state anywhere that we won't be eligible for the carrier data discount if we choose Apple Upgrade Program?

I made 2 Apple Store reservations, one under ATT Next and the other for Apple Upgrade. Not sure yet which one Im going ahead with.
This may be a deal breaker if true :(

i did not read this anywhere in the terms if thats what you're referring to, but yes, thats what the apple specialist told me. it makes sense, thats how verizon/ATT are incentivizing you to pick their plan. Yep definitely a deal breaker, id much rather have discount monthly than apple care+, especially since you'll only have phone for a year

Im not sure what discount you guys are talking about? I know for verizon, you get a discount for brining your own device and being out of contract. This should not effect that because as far as verizon knows, I just bought the phone in full somewhere else.

ya disregard as far as verizon goes, just looked a little deeper. anybody can get their rates. ATT however does give you a discount for using their payment plan.

ATT gives a $25 or $15 monthly discount ($25 in my case) if you sign up for ATT Next & have a mobile share data plan.

You guys are being BSed by reps who are trying to sell you Verizon and A$&$ products.

The Apple purchase includes applecare and your handsets are unlocked.

In the case of Verizon you definitely are better off with the Apple program. Verizon will give you a BYOD discount and on their payment plans, and if you buy with Verizon you have to pay off the phone in full before you can get upgrade discount pricing again. With Apple, you only have to pay half the phone before you can upgrade.

You get the discount if you either have a Next plan OR have an no annual contract phone with AT&T. So the Apple Upgrade phone will still qualify for the mobile share value discount as you are bringing your own "unlocked" phone.

Ding Ding Ding you are correct.

how would att even know. Ive brought unlocked phones over to the family share and still got the SVP discount. does att have a mechanism to find out if its an apple upgrade program phone??

yeah I think your specialist is definitely wrong here. I dont see how att or vz can find out if its an unlocked phone or an apple upgrade program phone. i guess att could block A1638 the iphone 6S CDMA one and say they wont be allowing it but that would be a small case and I am sure the iphone upgrade program will provide you with A 1633 if you choose att.

The Apple Upgrade Program is basically considered as BYOD (bring your own device). What I'm planning on doing is when I get the phone in-store on the 25th, I'll just transfer my sim card and be done with it.

It does really undercut the carriers here at some point as they lose their power over the customer in their options if/when they decide to trade-up.

In some way, the carriers will be happy that they'll get rid those subsidized customers. But they should know Apple customers are mostly loyal to the brand than the carriers themselves.

I get no discounts from AT&T. I have the grandfathered Data which they are trying desperately to get people to give up. I have always upgraded using the 2 year contract. I am not a fan of "leasing" a phone but I see that is the direction things are going now days. Doing the Apple upgrade program is less hassle. They won't try to talk me into changing plans. I always buy applecare so that just seemed like the best deal for me.
