....when safari and every other major browser has a built in search function? Last I checked, it's much faster to go ahead with your search, than to type google.com, then the search.

Is it just habit, or because there's something special I'm missing from going to google.com vs. just using the search built into Safari?

Google is my homepage. Allows me to just start typing rather than having to click in Safari's Google search field. With Google instant I don't even need to hit enter.

Why? Because we all have different preferences when it comes to how we search. What search engine we use, and what browser we prefer. I like them all, but prefer Chrome. In my experience it's very fast, has a nice interface, and I can search in the address bar.

Read the entire post, that wasn't the question. For a chrome user, the question for you would be, why would you go to Google.com instead of just typing your search right in the bar...and the search engine already set to Google.

My homepage is an iGoogle "desktop" that contains updated news topics that I am interested in.

I suppose I'll sometimes use the search bar to use Google (or Bing), but sometimes I still click on the the browser's Home button to go back to iGoogle so that I can take a quick glance at the news. This is particularly useful during the NHL and NBA seasons, since scoreboards are a part of my iGoogle. :)

I only use Google for Images, when I need to. Bing Images is nice, but I just haven't gotten used to it yet.

When you use inbuilt google search box you are using google search engine of your own country like I use that it will be google.co.in and not the ideal google.com and please note that search results of both are different!!!

To look at my background image of the wonderful korean group SNSD.

I've wondered this myself. I use the search box more then going to google.com

I always use the search box in the upper right corner unless I need to use the advanced options.
