Why X11?

I was just wondering why (ease maybe?) some apps are made to run in the X11 environment, I find it down right awkward...
 
I think it's an easier way to port from Linux to Unix. I don't know. It just seems that way. I just wish GIMPshop didn't need X11.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
