Wi-Fi issue iPhone 3G

Hey guys!

I'm having a bit of an issue. My father's iPhone 3G is having issues connect to wireless internet sources. I've connected it like I would any other iPhone, put in the password, and upon connection, I get numbers instead of the wifi symbol.

Any ideas on how to fix it? I removed his jailbreak, updated it, etc., but it's all to no avail. Any ideas are appreciated.
