Not entirely surprisingly, Wi-Fi Sync has been rejected from the App Store. We profiled the app in April. Wi-Fi Sync enabled users to wirelessly sync their iPhones with their computers via a local Wi-Fi network. The developer had submitted it to Apple with hopes that they would approve it for sale through the iTunes App Store. As many suspected, Apple rejected the app. Engadget cites the explanation the developer received from Apple.
"While he agreed that the app doesn't technically break the rules, he said that it does encroach upon the boundaries of what they can and cannot allow on their store. He also cited security concerns."

The developer is now distributing it outside the App Store on jailbroken phones for $9.99.

Most people seemed to expect that Wi-Fi would be rejected by Apple due to the unconventional nature of the app, but many were hoping to finally add wireless syncing as a feature to their iPhones.

So it didn't break the rules but it was rejected anyway. Gotcha. Heaven forbid an app makes the phone more useful.

Wow Apple well done there. The biggest app that matters to me you don't allow.

I may just jailbrake my 3GS now for the sake of it

The replies should focus on how this company is so horrible for going against Apple wishes and allowing this on jailbroken iPhones.

Wow...I'm a fanboy and I don't even care about Apple not allowing flash and all that stuff going on but this is an amazing app and that's facked up.

Just as soon as I thought I won't jailbreak because OS 4 allows for multi-tasking, I may have to jailbreak for this app and tethering.

Thanks Apple for keeping me physically tethered to my computer.

Hmmm wait a second...Wi-Fi Sync app + jailbroken tethering = Wi-Fi tethering. Sounds pretty awesome.

I bought it. Despite what everyone thought it actually did a sync just as fast as USB. Backing up went fast and moving apps over was equally as quick.

boom, wireless syncing in OS 4?

Perhaps there is still SOMETHING secret left for Steve to reveal next month!

it doesn't make any sense to not allow it... even if apple were adding the wifi syncing feature in the 4.0 update, he's just have the app out for a few months then sales would drop dramatically when everyone upgrades their OS

nothing is really lost here. come on apple!

Apple was, is and always will be about greatest possible user experience!

It is in YOUR interest not be able to wi-fi your iDevice!

Reason: it probably drains more battery power than if you sync it via USB...

Thanks Apple

iPhone OS4 will do it right?
All who are on 3GS and maybe even 3G will synch over Wi-fi soon.

Boo Hiss

Shame on you Apple. Come on either develop it yourself or let some one else do it. Why is it simple things like this and a decent search in iTunes seems to be so hard for Apple to develop. It is the one thing with Apple products, there are just some basic things that let their products down. They really need to have user groups to help them find out how they should improve things. I work in software development and I know that some of these things are not complicated and really would take little effort for Apple to fix.

I know I am going a bit off topic, but why in iPhoto when I import a load of folders, why not use the folder name as the event instead of just leaving it blank, or give me the option to name the event during import. Not exactly rocket science.

Norma users would continue to use the app instead of native sync because they just don't know.

Worth it? Gah apple is getting meaner and meaner to us supporters.

Yeah I think its worth it. I just hope more things get added. Right now you launch the app on your phone then click sync on your mac. In that time you could connect a wire. Regardless, it works how it should and is a lot faster than I expected.

Why doesn't Apple have this functionality built-in to these products? It seems like a no brainer??? Apple probably has something in the works, so it doesn't want to seem it copied this??? I don't get Apple sometimes.

I've never understood why you can't at least plug your iPhone into an Airport or TC and sync to a wired or wireless Mac on the network.

:apple:

And this is why the App store is broken, and why I hope the EC sues Apple to hell at the moment.

In the future...

Ultimately, I think there should be a task scheduler (iPhone OS 8?) so that you can schedule an application to run (with an options parameter) so that these sorts of applications will run overnight before you have even woke up, sync'd and ready to pick up and go. No fumbling around in the morning half awake trying to connect cables required.
