i have a lot of wide screen movies and shows that look great in my laptop but i don't like how they look on my 5g ipod. is there anyway i can make them "normal-screen" (non wide screen)?

You can make the iPod crop the video so that it's 4:3 in the Video Settings on the iPod itself. There should be a menu item called "widescreen" or similar. If you turn it off it'll crop the video to 4:3 and blow it up to fit fully on the screen. Might look a bit funny though.
