When you put the keyboard in widescreen mode in an app like Messages, it shows you the extra icons on the left and right. Does anyone know how I can remove these and compensate for the normal basic keyboard but much bigger? I'd rather have bigger keys than those icons.

Outside of using a 2nd party keyboard I don't think so. I don't like the stretched keys I saw with swiftkey

Nope, you cannot modify it. But as @newone757 says, that's what keyboard extensions are for. These are still in the early days on iOS, I haven't found one I completely love yet, but they will get there.

My only knock on the 6+ so far is the landscape keyboard. I'm not a fan of it but I will probably never use it anyways.

I don't understand why they switched the position of buttons for numbers and switching keyboards when it's landscape. Portrait keyboard has number button then globe button. Landscape keyboard has globe then numbers.

Switching to zoomed mode will remove a column on each side.
