Im very confused as to how to make use of these widgets.

I placed a "Google Maps" widget, for example, on my Air - but every time I click the search field it says: "Open google on iPhone to continue." Aren't I supposed to be able to use the widget on my desktop?

Interactive widgets are being introduce in iOS 17 / macOS 14. The Google Maps has not been updated yet, all it can do is to open the Google Maps app on the iPhone at the moment. Maybe Google will update it this fall after the iOS 17 release, maybe not.
