I'm getting this wierd sound on startup, sort of like the sound when you throw a file in the garbage. It lasts for a second or 2 . Is this normal????

I tried muting the speakers to see if that was it but I still heard the sound.

Any thoughts or ideas appreciated. THANKS

Possibly the superdrive (DVD drive). It generally tries to mount when the computer starts up to check if there's a disc inserted, which causes a brief mechanical sound. Happens on all my Macs.

It s really the sound when you move a file to garbage, i def know what a mechinal noise is and a software related noise :)

Perhaps it would help if you were a little more explicit. In your first post you said "sort of like the sound when you throw a file in the garbage". Now you say "it's really the sound....."

Surely, if it was a software related noise, it wouldn't be heard if you muted the speakers? (As you stated in your original post!)

You say it sounds like the trash emptying.. Well how does the Trash empty when the OS hasn't even booted? ;)

As John said, its the superdrive and nothing else.

The guy you quoted and the OP are two different people, fwiw.

Edit: Oops. Disregard this.
