I have a problem I'm not able to find a workaround to. My 2013 Macbook Air connects to my home wifi and I have assigned an IP to it (192.168...) and I need it that way... everything works perfect.

The problem starts when I'm not at home and have to connect to my iPhone's personal hotspot. Now the MBA detects the hotspot, but won't connect to it, because I've assigned an IP to the mac. It starts working just fine as soon as I remove the manually assigned IP and change the setting to use DHCP instead.

I need to have a self assigned static IP at home. Is there a workaround to this so that I don't have to switch back and forth between DHCP and manual every-time I need to connect to a different wifi?

Just follow this guide to setup two "locations" in your network pref pane in System Preferences. One for home with the fixed IP and a second for away with DHCP.

Thanks a million, Weaselboy, for the quick and helpful reply. My issue is resolved. You made my day. -))
